Marta:
Why do we have to learn these things?
Maria:
Because they're things we must never forget. Things we might see again
one day. Your grandparents saw them. Now, let's go on.
Children:
Bird! Rain!
Groat stalks in
Maria:
Shh!
Groat:
What are you doing, Maria?
Maria:
We're only playing a game Groat.
Groat:
You're lying. You were teaching that is forbidden. Don't let me catch
you again.
Maria collects the children up and they leave. Outside the Machine Rooms
Groat calls the workers to the beginning of their day's shift.

Jade is caught between two cogs in one of the Machines. She screams and
workers rush to her rescue. Maria helps her to the floor.
Bring On The Night
Jade:
Look, the sun, Maria…
I' knew I'd see it one day.
Can you see it?
Maria:
Yes I can see it
Jade dies, George her boyfriend is distraught and workers go to comfort
him others prepare Jade for her 'funeral'.
Maria:
Hold back the night
Don't let the darkness fill her soul
She will still fly high, someday
'Though days are dark
And nothing comes to light the way
She will still fly high, some day.
Marco:
Feels like we're working for the devil
He don't give a damn if we don't survive
Feels like we're working for the devil
Fighting each day to just stay alive.
Nothing can last, nothing can live
Everything breaks, everyove gives
Freedom won't come, waited so long
The weak go first, finally the strong.
Maria (+ Marco)
Hold back the night
(Feels like we're working for the devil)
He don't give a damn if we don't survive Don't let the darkness fill her
soul
(He don't give a damn if we don't survive)
She will still fly high someday
Marco:
Deep in the night, there's a burning
Hungry for life, there's a yearning
But the machines keep on turning
Sealing our fate
Hoping our spirits will break.
George / (Marco) / Maria
She thought she once saw the sun
(Feels like we're working for the devil)
Hold back the night
She thought there was hope for us down here
What did she know about life?
(He don't give a damn if we don't survive)
Don't let the darkness fill her soul
Now I must believe up there, the world is only bad and man must perish
from the earth
She will still fly high someday
George / (Marco) / GIRLS / Maria
She thought she once saw the sun
(Feels like we're working for the devil)
HOLD BACK THE NIGHT
Warm eyes and laughter
She thought there was hope for us down here
What did she know about life?
(He don't give a damn if we don't survive)
DON'T LET THE DARKNESS FILL HER SOUL
She once knew
Now I must believe up there, the world is only bad and man must perish
from the earth
(Feels like we're working for the devil
Fighting each day to just stay alive.)
SHE WILL STILL FLY HIGH SOMEDAY
Someone keeps something for somebody, gone so soon
Jade's body is carried high on the shoulders of the workers.
Maria:
Though days are dark
And nothing comes to light the way
She will still fly high someday
Workers:
Though days are dark
And nothing comes to light the way
She will still fly high
Guards arrive in a lift with body bag. The body is put into the bag
unceremoniously and taken away.
Workers:
Though days are dark
And nothing comes to light the way
We will all fly high someday
George:
How many more deaths, Maria before we do something?
Maria:
Come children, now it's time to make our journey
Maria and the children leave, the workers follow under the machines.
SCENE 2 - JOHN FREEMAN'S OFFICE
The Machines Are Beautiful
In the upper levels Freeman and Jeremiah are busy working at the
computers that control Metropolis
Freeman:
The machines are beautiful
More perfect than man
And they must be kept running
Any way that they can
The machines are beautiful
And workers mere slaves
Machines will still be turning
When we're deep in our graves
The machines are beautiful
Creation a man
They're the strength of the city
They're the heart a the plan
They show no emotion
They will always obey
Machines will still be running
Through the night through the day
Future
We must ensure the future
It is a point of nature
Metropolis will always be here
Always watch the power
We're helpless without power
We'd face eternal winter
And starve and die
And nothingness
Nothing less
The machines are beautiful
The future is black
We can love them or leave them
We can never turn back
The machines are beautiful
They will never betray
Machines will keep us gong
There is no other way
No other way
Groat appears in a lift and speaks through an intercom.
Freeman:
Ah, Groat! Why did the pressure dip at eighteen nine?
Groat:
Sir, worker 1312 has been terminally discontinued.
Freeman:
Yes, but why did the pressure fall Groat? The pressure can only fall if
workers leave the machines during a shift. You're not telling me that
happened are you?
Groat:
No, never!
Freeman:
Machines don't lie. Machines are beautiful, wouldn't you say Groat?
Groat:
Beautiful Sir.
Freeman:
I'm so glad, you're so appreciative. My spies have
Confirmed reports that there is a woman in Machine Room 22 who is
creating discontent. What do you know about this?
Groat:
Nothing sir!
Freeman:
I understand that there is some sort of ritual going on down there. Put
an end to it immediately!
Groat:
Yes sir
Jeremiah:
Mr. Freeman will hold you personally responsible further
inconsistencies.
Freeman:
Restore order or i will put you back on the machines
Groat:
Yes, sir!
Freeman:
You may go.
Groat exits as Warner appears.
Freeman:
Ah, Warner the great inventor! Come in, come in, come here. Today is the
day for the prototype of my robot. Where is it?
Warner:
I need more time.
Freeman:
I give you a great deal 0! Time to build a perfect mechanical creature
with all the functions of a human being a what do I get? Excuses. I keep
on telling you workers are expendable. My eyes are on the future. I need
robots. I need them now. Very disappointing. Go away, leave me.
Jeremiah:
Take heed, Warner!
Freeman:
Time is running out for Warner. Jeremiah, go with him and bring me the
profiles of all the workers in Machine Room 22, will you?
Jeremiah:
Yes, Sir.
Freeman:
Thank you.
Steven arrives
Jeremiah:
Steven, do excuse me.
Jeremiah and Warner exit
Freeman:
Steven! You wanted to see me?
Steven:
Yes, father.
Freeman:
It must be important for you to pay me a visit. That is something you
usually try to avoid these days.
Steven
I will not be involved in learning how to run your city unless I know
everything. Now I have asked you before, why am I forbidden to do below?
Freeman:
Be patient, in time you will have all the knowledge you need.
Steven:
No, I've waited long enough
Freeman: (Laughing)
Steven!
Steven:
Don't patronise me father< I'm not a child. I've obeyed you up until
now, never asking and …awkward questions. Father its time for me to
know!
Freeman:
My dear boy, understand I need you. I'm not getting any younger. I have
to say you are not ready yet.
Steve:
Them when will I be ready?
Freeman:
Be patient, trust in my wisdom.
Jeremiah returns
Jeremiah:
The printouts you asked for Sir.
Freeman:
Thank you Jeremiah
Steven:
I'm leaving you now father
Steven leaves
Freeman:
I've enjoyed our short conversation, we must do it more often.
Jeremiah:
Sir, there are some things Steven should not know, but with respect, now
is not the time to neglect him.
Freeman:
Yes, you may be right, Jeremiah.
Jeremiah:
With regard to machine room 22, six workers have had to be terminated. I
dealt with it personally
Freeman:
Splendid, Jeremiah! You see, Steven has a conscience, and you, my dear
Jeremiah, have not.
Jeremiah
No Sir.
Freeman:
The machines are beautiful
More perfect than man
And they must be kept running
Any way that they can
The machines are beautiful
They will never betray
Machines will keep us gong
There is no other way
SCENE 3 - AN OPEN SPACE
He's Distant From Me Now
Steven:
He's distant from me now
How sad it seems
That he can't see
He's losing me.
He thinks that no one else
Can take his place
He'll disappear
Without a trace
Duty
He thinks it's my duty
To follow his lead
Admire his schemes
His cold and futile dreams
To start
Oh, how can I start?
To look for some warmth
To struggle and fight
To change my empty heart?
Does he know what it's like
To be his son?
The precious boy
The perfect one?
It's a privilege
Beyond the dreams
Of anyone
John Freeman's Son!
My life
Must now be my own
But which way to turn?
The power and pain
Belong to him alone
To start
Oh, how can I start?
To look for some warmth
To look for some love?
He's distant from me now
How sad.
It seems that he can't see
He's losing me.
The Elitists'Dance
The Elisist's Dance Corps performa and than all exit except Steven and
Lulu
Lulu:
Steven, what's wrong?
Steven:
I'm sorry Lulu. I have a lot on my mind.
Lulu:
I don't understand you!
Lulu exits followed by Steven. The children and Maria come up to the
surface.
Oh My, What A Beautiful City
Children:
Oh my what a beautiful city
How tall are the buildings
The windows so high
Oh my what a beautiful city
How wide and how white is the sky.
This Is The Vision We're Forbidden
Maria:
This is the vision we're forbidden
Mighty and powerful, beautiful, rich and strong
Now you can see the way they live here
Children you need to see this once
And you will always remember this day
And will know what is above
And what is below
Steven enters, Maria turns to face him.
Maria:
Look at this man who stands before you
Look at his arrogance
Look at his perfect skin
Children you need to see it
Children you need to know it
Steven:
Who are you? Don't be afraid. I've never seen anyone have the courage to
come up here before.
Maria:
I know it's forbidden but for the children our book was no longer
enough.
Jose
Maria, what does the sun look like?
Maria:
It's just as I showed you in the book, it's round and it's orange and it
keeps us warm.
Marta
Where is it, I can't see it?
Maria:
I don't know I thought I'd recognise it.
Steven:
Oh, it's up there somewhere. But I'm afraid we don't see much of it
ourselves these days.
An alarm goes off. Jeremiah and guards enter
Jeremiah
Get rid of them!
Steven:
No!
Jeremiah:
You know these upper levels are strictly forbidden for you people.
Steven:
Who are you? And who are these children?
Maria:
These children are your brothers and your sisters.
The Children of Metropolis
Maria:
We are the children of Metropolis
The forgotten ones beneath this city
Now you can see them
Think of the years you've been avoiding this
To scared to look below your city
They don't see the sun
Are you brave enough to face these children?
You who live like princes in Metropolis
You cannot ignore the cries of children
Lost in the darkness
They don't breathe the sweet air
They don't see the sun
Are you brave enough to face these children.
Have you no heart?
Do you not care enough?
You who keep your conscience safe at home
How can you live with such indifference?
Would you do this to children a your own?
We are the children a metropolis
The forgotten ones beneath this city
Look at these faces
You need human souls to feed metropolis
The forgotten ones beneath this city
Maria:
Come children
Steven:
Wait! I need to talk to you.
Jeremiah:
Your father would never allow this.
Maria and the children leave. Steven follows them.
Lulu:
Steven!
Jeremiah calls up Freeman in an intercom
Jeremiah:
Urgent access. Urgent access. Control office.
Freeman's voice:
Control here. What is it?
Jeremiah:
Steven has followed the intruders to the Workers' Zone.
Freeman's voice:
He's done WHAT!? Stop him Jeremiah! He must not see the conditions down
there. Stop him immediately!
SCENE $ - MACHINE ROOM 22
Tannoy Voice 1:
Toxic hydrocarbons have risen above the danger levels. Gas masks must be
worn immediately repeat the toxic level is now life threatening. All gas
masks must be worn immediately
Tannoy Voice 2:
The toxic alert is only temporary we will inform you as soon as the
level falls. Please remember to make sure your gas masks fit securely
thank you.
The workers return. Steven enters and looks about him.

One more morning
Steven and Workers
One more night!
Siren for the a break in the shift, suddenly the children appear and run
past Steve
Steven:
Hey, where are you going?
Lake:
Nowhere, Sir.
Steven:
Why are you so frightened of me?
Steve looks at one of the youngest children and she recognises him and
smiles
You! You came up to the city, didn't you?
That was a very brave thing to do. Now, can you tell me where i can find
the young woman who was with you?
Beso
That's Maria, she's our teacher.
Lake
Shhh!
The children run off frightened but Lake and one of the other girls
return and hide behind the machines watching Steve.
It's only love/bring on the night
Steven:
Who does she belong to?
Is she on her own?
Someone who's that wonderful
Must belong to someone
Should I take a chance
Can she be the one I've waited for so long?
Is this really happening to me?
The feelings are so strong
If it's only love
Shouldn't be enough to break my heart
If it's only love, it's only love
Feelings from the heart
Do not come easy for me
I have not had many lovers in my life
And mostly that was my own choice
Out of nowhere now she comes into my life
And I know so fast she has to be part
Of my life
If it's only love
Shouldn't be enough to break my heart
If it's only love
It's only love.
It's only love
It's only love.
The girls lead Steven off, Maria enters
Maria:
Bring on the night
I can take the darkness
I'm not empty inside
I don't lie awake long
And I know that in this life
The strong are the winners
So if I'm alone
I'm not on my own
Everybody has pain
And if once in a while
I catch myself crying
If I'm a little sad
Perhaps it's not so bad
It's part of the game
In the cold and lonely night
I can still be strong
I can make it on my own
No one really needs to love
Not everyone needs love
If you've love inside
You don't have to share it to share
And I will survive...
The girls point out Maria and leave Steve
Steven (+ Maria)
Who do you belong to, are you on your own?
(Even though it's hurting me)
Someone that wonderful they must belong.
(Though I'm asking too much and aiming too high.)
Shall I take a chance?
(If tonight I find)
And out of nowhere here you walk into my life.
(I need someone badly I will hide the pain)
And I know so fast you have to be part of my life.
(Here it comes again, Bring on the night)
Steve:
Part of my life, bring on the night
Steven (+ Maria)
If it's only love
(It won't take long)
Shouldn't be enough to break my heart
(I will be strong enough will love find a way?)
If it's only love, it's only love
(It won't take long, it's only love)
If it's only love
(It won't take long)
Shouldn't be enough to break my heart
(I will be strong enough will love find a way?)
If it's only love, it's only love
(It won't take long, it's only love)
Maria:
It's only love
Steven & Maria:
It's only love
Maria sees Steven and runs off frightened. Freeman and Jeremiah appear
Freeman:
Seven! Stay where you are. These people can be dangerous
Steven:
It was just a young woman and some children, father.
Freeman:
Steven, it is strictly forbidden to come down here.
Steven:
I know
Freeman:
Are you obsessed with this girl? Describe her to me…. I see. She
intrigues you because she's strange.
Steven:
She has courage.
Freeman:
I forbid you to come here again.
Steven:
These people never see daylight. They eat and sleep in the shadow of
these machines. They live and die like cattle.
Freeman:
They don't know any better they're perfectly happy the way they are. It
would be cruel for them to know anything else.
Steven:
And what do you know about them? They're just a source of human energy
for you. That's all.
Freeman:
Exactly earth's resources are exhausted. We have no energy left but
human energy we are elitists and they are workers. That is all there is
to know
Steven:
Then I'm going to change that. I'm not taking orders from you anymore.
Freeman:
Then you must face the consequences.
Steven:
Oh, I'm prepared to do that.
Steven walks off disgusted
Freeman:
Steven! It's that arrogant girl. Why does she attract my son? How does
she have the courage to show herself up there I want to know everything
about her, Jeremiah.
Jeremiah:
They all look the same to me. How will I find her again?
Freeman:
Follow my son!
Freeman leaves and Jeremiah is suddenly surrounded by workers from the
next shift - he looks on incredulously. He also exits. Steven enters and
observes the workers.
Groat:
Come on to work, to work! Let's see some action over there! Move it!
MOVE IT! When I say move it, I mean mo-ve it!
Groat (+ Workers)
Push!

Steve has found Maria again and follows her and the children into the
Machine area.
Maria:
Have you come to spy on us?
Steven:
No I've come to help you.
Maria:
Help us! How can you help us? Who are you?
Steven:
I'm Steven, John Freeman's son.
Maria:
This a trick? You are an informer.
Steven:
No, I just want to help you.
Maria:
Is this some kind of a game? There is no time for games here, only work.
Maria leaves. Steven crosses to George
Steven:
Here, let me do that.
George:
I don't take orders from you!
Steven:
Come on!
George:
I can't leave the machines!.
Steven:
Come on!
Steven grabs George and drags him off stage where they change clothes.
Pressure Chant
Groat:

What's your name?
George:
11811.
Steven:
No, no, your real name.
George:
George
Steven
Well George, I am now 11811. Take the lift up to the city, you'll be
safe there.
George: (confused)
I want to go back to the machine
Steven:
No, just go to level 8. Follow the signs to the club of the sons and
I'll join you there.
George:
But what if someone notices me?
Steven:
They're too busy noticing themselves; just don't talk to anyone, then
you'll be safe. Go on! I'll come. You'll be all right.
Steven pushes George into the lift
Groat:
Push!
Workers:
Pressure, higher
Groat:
Push!
Workers:
Pressure, higher
Steven:
Day after day we work on these machines
This is what they call life
Every hour is strife
Every morning every night
Give me reason give me light
If this is life
I've never seen this life before
If this is life
A man has got to want more
Push... Push!
Pressure's falling
Keep on pushing
Pressure's falling
Keep on pushing
Keep on pushing...
A bell rings to signal the end of the shift, the workers leave. Steve
sits down exhausted on a pipe. Two workers pass him.
1900:
Aren't you coming to Maria's meeting?
Steven:
Maria's meeting?
1391:
Come with us...
SCENE 5 - THE CATACOMBS
The workers enter, they have mining lamps on their heads and rugs round
their shoulders
When Maria comes
Workers:
So we shall wait, we'll wait
For soon this slavery will end, will end
Gone the torment, gone the anguish
When the perfect morning breaks
When Maria comes
Maria enters high above them.
You are the light
Maria:
My friends my brothers and my sisters
Every time we meet our meetings are growing
Every time I speak you hear me better
And I know your memory's growing.
But there's one thing
You've always got to know
That you are the light
You are the future
Where there is wrong you'll make it right
Let every heart rise up and follow
Be strong for you are the light.
No man is small if he's a believer
You'll only lose if you don't fight
Pass the torch to your children
Let them not fear the night
You must keep this vision in your sight
For you are the light …
Men:
We are the light
Maria:
You are the future
Girls:
We are the light
Maria
When there is wrong you'll make it right
Workers
We'll make it right
So soon, so soon
Maria
From every house
Workers
So soon …
Maria
Rise up and follow
Workers
We will rise
Maria
Be strong for you are the light
Workers
We will be strong
Maria:
Keep with the faith, when times are hardest
Workers:
We will be strong!
Maria:
You're bound to fail if you delay
Workers:
We won't delay now
Maria: (+ Workers)
Though your body may be weary
(Soon now)
Let your spirit be strong
(Soon now)
There's a new life that's coming with the dawn
(Soon now ….)
Workers:
A new life is coming
From every house we will rise.
We will sing one song
And we …
Maria:
One song
Workers:
… will be strong
Maria:
Be strong!
Workers:
If we ….
Everyone
…stand together
Maria:
Singing …
Workers:
We are the light
Maria:
You are the light
Workers:
We will find our way at last
Maria:
You are the light
Workers:
And we will see the sun shine through…..
From every house
Maria:
You are the light, you are the future
Workers:
And home, we will rise.
Maria (+Workers):
Where there is wrong we'll make it right
(We will sing one song)
Workers:
And we ..
Maria:
Let every heart
Workers:
And we will be strong
Maria (+Workers):
Rise up and follow
(… so strong)
Be strong for you ..
(We will see the sun shire through)
Maria
You are the light
Workers:
The sun shire through
Maria
You are the light
Workers:
The sun shire through
Maria:
You are the light
Workers:
We will be strong
Maria & Workers

Freeman and Jeremiah are watching from above.
The Girl Is A Witch d
Jeremiah:
This girl is a witch
A dangerous witch
She wants to control
Every mind, every soul
I know she's a witch
A dangerous witch
She wants to control every mind, every soul.
Freeman:
The girl is a danger. A born agitator, an anarchist. She must not
threaten metropolis! Take her up!
Jeremiah exits. Freeman remains above watching.
Maria:
My friends, it's time to go. Remember what we've said. Do nothing hasty
till we meet again.
The workers leave
Workers:
Yes we shall wait we' ll wait
For soon this slavery will end we'll end
The workers leave, Maria and Steve are alone, Groat arrives.
Groat:
You! What's your number?
Steven:
11811.
Groat:
Well, 11811, you are guilty of indiscipline. You will work a double
shift.
Maria:
A double shift will kill him!
Groat:
He knows the rules.
Maria:
A double shift will kill him!
Groat wanders off muttering to himself. Maria talks to Steven
Maria:
I'm sorry for what I said to you. I didn't think you were foolish enough
to work on the machines. Now please go home quickly before you get
killed.
Steven:
Maria!
Maria:
Please don't come down here again
Steven:
I'm not leaving
cc
It's only love (reprise)
Maria:
I've a life so different from the one you know
How can we speak words of love?
You should be my enemy and we both know
I'm the victim of your father's tyranny
Banished here and there's an anger
Deep inside of me.
If it's only love
Shouldn't be enough
To break my heart
If it's only love
It's only love
It's only...
Maria kisses Steven, Maria goes off as Groat enters.
Groat:
Come on you. You're working an extra shift.
Two guards overpower Maria, and they drag her off
Steven:
What's going on? Why have they taken that girl?
Groat:
None of your business.
Steven:
Who do you think you're talking to?
Groat recognises Steven and panics.
Groat:
I-I-I wasn't told. I didn't realise. Forgive me. Is your father not
happy with my work?
Steven pushes Groat away and runs after Maria.
Freeman:
Groat! If my son wishes to remain below then work him, work him hard! No
privileges! Now control these workers! Stop this ritual or i will
replace you!
Groat:
Yes, sir!
AN OPEN SPACE IN THE UPPER REGIONS
The Sun
George arrives on his own
George:
Is this a game?
This is mad. It's insane
Am I leaving a hell
To be free?
Can it be right
They've denied me the light
'Til today? Hope's in sight
Now for me
Can it be?
For the sun never shines
Cos the rules never bend
Not a shimmer of light
Ever reaches me
It's the same old world
That it used to be
For the sun never shines
Never shines on me.
My heart's like a stone
Now I'm truly alone
But I face the unknown
Never free
So much I fear
There's no justice up here
But the sweet smell of air
Beckoned me
Can it be?
For the sun never shines
Cos the rules never bend
Not a shimmer of light ever reaches me
So the pain never ends.
All my nights have been long
All mw life has been wrong
It's the same old world
That it used to be
For the sun never shines
Never shines on me
Never shines on me
Shine on me
SCENE 8 - WARNER'S LABORATORY
Almost Done
Warner:
Almost done
Almost there
Perfect form
Perfect care
Every move
Full of grace
Now I must find the perfect face
I will search
Day and night
Find for her
Features right
Not alone
Change my life
At last she'll change
My life
Jeremiah enters
Warner:
What are you doing here?
What do you want with me?
I haven't time for a spy
You're one of freeman's men
Don't want all that again
I haven't time for a spy
Jeremiah:
You're a failure, old man
What happened to those old things
You used to build?
You're losing your touch
Need some help with the details
Your work is overdue.
You must protect your health
You've got to prove yourself
Got something lovely for you
Freeman arrives
Warner:
What are you doing here?
Freeman:
A rumour has reached our ears that your work has been progressing rather
better than you led us to believe.
Warner:
This is a bad time. I'm in the middle of an experiment.
Freeman:
Show us this creature. I'd like to know why you're so keen to keep this
discovery to yourself.
Warner:
She's not ready yet.
Freeman:
Warner show us this creature!
Warner:
Not a creature. A woman . . . I call her Futura.
Warner opens the capsule and manipulates a remote-control box that makes
Futura walk about
Freeman:
Fascinating, extraordinary. Congratulations, Warner. Futura, what a
pretty name. Quite remarkable, but the future still has no face. We must
help you to find a face for this creature.
Futura goes back into the capsule.
I don't need help from you
Warner:
I don't need help from you
I couldn't work with you
Don't even know why you came
Jeremiah:
You are wasting your time, senile fool!
Warner:
Whatever i can do
I'll need no help from you
Why don't you tell me your game
There's A Girl Down Below
Jeremiah:
Don't you know
There's a girl down below
More beautiful than any girl I've ever seen?
The life she has led
Jeremiah (+Warner)
Hasn't coarsened her features
(Lies! That's all you tell me)
Jeremiah
Her eyes are clear and true
Warner:
Never trust you!
Jeremiah:
You want a girl with grace
You want a perfect face
This is the passport to fame
Warner:
Never trust you
Jeremiah:
You want a perfect face
Study each curve, each trace
Warner:
Why don't you tell me her name?
Security bring in Maria, she has been drugged and is tied up in a sheet.
Freeman:
Her name is Maria. As you can see, we're one step ahead of you already
Warner exposes Maria's face
Warner:
What you told me was true, a perfect face. Your search was worth it.
Freeman:
Well, the girl was a danger, a born agitator. She's more useful here.
Maria is put into the capsule by Warner. He shuts both capsule doors and
goes to central control panel
Freeman:
How long will this take, Warner? If this another failure, then you are
for the junkyard.
Warner:
You must be patient. This is science
It takes time.
Warner:
Perfect fit, not too tight
First impression must be right
Jeremiah:
The mask, the face
Such style, such silent grace
Give me power, give me heat
Human face, soon complete
All my plans, all my schemes
At last, my dreams
Warner throws a switch and Futura slowly takes of the form of Maria. He
opens the capsule and she walks forwards.
Freeman:
Futura! Futura, I am freeman. You must obey me. She is beautiful
exquisite! Absolutely beautiful!
Futura
Freeman:
Now is the time for a change
Who would believe such as she
Could become the perfect woman
Now I'll make her work for me
My son will see a different girl
A woman's flesh that's carved from steel
His dream girl's a traitor
Now see what's real!
No doubts, no fears,
The time is here
Can't break, can't bend
She will lead them to their end!
Warner:
Never! You can't steal her! She's mine!
Freeman:
Let Futura, show me the way
Spread confusion in the workers
Make them pay for treason
Let Futura show me the way
I see the future, it's here today!
Steven enters and sees the robot, he thinks its Maria but she ignores
him.
Steven:
Maria!
Freeman:
Let Futura show me the way
This Venus soars triumphant
From the hands of clay
Let Futura show me the way
I see the future, I see the future ..
Worker's Voices:
We have no future but to keep on pushing
Pressure's falling
Freeman:
She's here today!
Worker's Voices:
Keep on turning, pushing night and day!
END OF ACT ONE
ACT 2
SCENE 1 - THE BALLROOM
George comes out of a lift looking around confused. The door to the
ballroom comes open and inside we see the Elitists having a party.
Nothing really matters.
Elitists:
We're the cream, we're the crust
We're for pleasure, we're for lust
All the fun has just begun
We are the children of the sun
Cutting teeth, cutting through
Life for me is death for you
Shut your eyes, shut your ears
We are the children of the years
And to us nothing really matters in this world
It's power that's the thing
The taste of pure sweet decadence
And the pleasure that it brings
A sweet young thing to hold
So we will not be cold
And winter snow will never come
And we will not grow old
That's what we have been told
It's always been like this
Machine built edifice
The power of Metropolis!
Three Elitists have just realised that George isn't one of them. He is
attacked and beaten up. Jeremiah comes over.
Jeremiah:
What's your name?
George:
11811
Jeremiah:
Get rid of him now.
Two guards move forwards towards George. Steven enters, sees what is
going one and rushed over.
Steven:
Wait! This was just a joke. It was a game!
Jeremiah:
What is this, Steven?
Steven:
A little bit of fun, Jeremiah.
Jeremiah:
It's not very runny
I've Seen A Nightmare
Steven:
I've seen a nightmare
A vision of hell
I've been a worker
I've a story to tell
Of so many deaths
Of massive machines
Jeremiah:
Why bother them with something that they've never seen?
This Is Life
Jeremiah and elitists:
This is life, lived like a story
This is life at its best and its glory
Keeper a dreams and singer a songs
This is the land we love
And we'll keep it strong
Freeman arrives, the Elitists bow to him
Freeman:
My dear friends I welcome you
Here's someone special, someone new
The new form, the new face
Most perfect of the human race.
Futura enters, Warner slips into the side of the room to watch what is
happening.
Warner:
Futura, oh my Futura. Why did I allow him to take you away from me?
Jeremiah:
You have no power to change anything.
Look At This Girl Who Stands Before You
Freeman:
Look at this girl who stands before you
Look at her confidence
Look at her perfect skin
See how upright her perfect figure
People, you need to see this once
And you will always remember this sight
Perfection's touched your lives tonight
I can't believe, she's such a beauty
Why am I feeling like this? What is gong on?
People, you need to learn from this
How quickly beauty comes
And how slowly it goes
Dance!
Futura's Dance
Steven and George return
Steven:
Maria!
Freeman:
Ha, ha! Marvellous! Isn't my discovery wonderful? I must admit, you've
got very good taste, my boy and congratulations on your costume. It is
most original! Think! Tonight every man in metropolis will be dreaming
about her!
Warner:
Futura!
Freeman:
Ha! Ha! Ha! And she's all mine. In you go, my dear. Exquisite!
Perfection! Remember this sight, my friends. Please continue with the
party my dear boy, take care of Lulu. My good friends, I bid you
goodnight.
Freeman and Futura leave in a lift
Where Do You Think She's Gone?
Jeremiah:
Where do you think she's gone,
Your precious Maria?
Gone back to where she belongs,
Your darling Maria.
Elitists:
Fool to believe in such a pretty defeatist
Your workers' Madonna's become an elitist
Lulu:
You won't see here face again, your pretty Maria
Lulu & Jeremiah:
She wants new life and new fame
Can't blame your Maria
Elitists
Give up these high ideals
You'll only get hurt now
Lulu & Jeremiah:
The only reality here is
Workers must work now.
Elitists:
Fool to make fun of us
Revenge is the sweetest
Lulu & Jeremiah:
Your workers' Madonna's become an elitist.
Elitists:
She's become an elitist. (repeat to fade)
Everyone leaves and Steven is left to reflect on his misfortune
If That Was Love (This Is My Time)
Steven:
If that was love
Something so inspiring
I've got too much to lose
And too little to win
But I know in my heart
I've made a decision
Nothing left to say
Go the hardest way
If that was love
Maybe a hunch
Maybe it's a gamble
Am I facing the facts?
Did I look at the truth?
It's hard to live in a world
Where your close ones betray you
But I'll carry on
I've seen her be so strong
This is my time
If it's only love
Shouldn't be enough to break my heart
If it's only love
It's only love
Steven breaks down; George is not very impressed by his behaviour at
all!
George:
So it was just Maria. You don't care about us!
Steven:
How can I help you if she's the one you listen to?
George:
We listen to anyone who brings us hope. I'm going back!
Steven:
You can't leave on your own, it's not safe!
George:
I hate your world and I hate your people. Why did I trust you? They
could have killed me!
Steven:
I saved you...
George:
Some hero! I'm going back to my people. You have no idea what's going on
down there, you've only worked one shift. My girl was killed in one of
your father's machines. And
When people die, even their bodies are taken away from us!
Listen To Me
George:
There is little time for love there
Night and day it s always the same
I lost all I have to love there
There's no time to dwell on the pain
Steven:
I have lost my only love here
Right or wrong, to her I'll be true
If I say goodbye to love here
Who will be my friend here, but you?
George:
So leave here and help us
She's gone now she's worthless
Steven:
How can I save her, oh my friend?
George:
Your love is a lie
Steven:
I cannot stop my love for her
George:
Each day workers die
Steven (+George)
My friend what can I do
(Your anger's strong)
Knowing what my father did
(We need you to belong
This city's not free)
Steven:
Won't satisfy me
George:
Surely now you have your answer?
Steven:
How can you tell me to do this?
I have lost my only love here
George:
Don't sell our lives for a kiss!
Steven:
In my youth my father told me
Told me soon this city was mine
George:
Never told of the machine rooms
Workers dropping dead on the line.
So leave her …
Steven (+George):
Why did she reject me,
(…and help us)
ignore me?
(She's gone now she's worthless)
How can I leave her
(Pressure's mounting down below)
Oh my friend?
(Help us we have got to know)
I cannot stop my love for her
(We need you to help us here)
Knowing what my father did
George:
Each day workers die
Steven (+George):
My friend what can I do
(Your anger's strong)
Knowing what my father did
(We need you to belong)
Steven & George:
The city's not free
Steven:
Please listen to me
George:
We've got to break free
George & Steven:
Please listen to me!
SCENE 2 - THE WORKERS' ZONE
Freeman sends Futura down to the workers to begin his plan
Freeman:
Futura! Listen to me. Take the place of Maria. Spread confusion in the
workers. Demoralise them. Use the children. I will monitor you and watch
you. Remember, use the children . . . The pretty, pretty pretty' pretty
children . .
The machine room. Lake has Maria's "book" and looks to see if the coast
is clear.
Lake:
Shh!
Children:
Tree, sun, flow-er, bird.
Marta:
What does a bird really look like, Beso?
Beso:
I don't know we should ask Maria.
Lake:
But she isn't here.
Jose:
Perhaps something's happened to her
Marta: (calls)
Maria!
Crisscross:
Not so loud.
Abel:
Groat will hear.
Lake:
It's alright, I saw him round the corner he was snoring!
The children fall about laughing, Futura enters. She is dressed as
Maria.
Marta:
Maria!
Jose:
Where have you been?
Crisscross:
It's time for the lesson.
Marta:
I can count up to a hundred.
Futura:
Child-ren.
Abel:
Yes.
Jose:
What's the matter?
Futura:
What-Are-You-Doing?
Tan:
We've come for the lesson. We always have our lesson at this time. Don't
you remember?
Beso shows her the book. Futura grabs it
Futura:
Lesson. Yes.
Crisscross:
Why didn't you come to our lesson yesterday?
Futura:
I wasn't . . . Here . . . Yesterday
Jose:
She must have been ill.
Futura:
Show me your lessons.
Tan:
I think she still is.
The Learning Song
Children:
Life on the planet began one day
Man came and he built his family tree
He got on very well
The world was a great and warm and happy
Place to be
To fight
Wasn't right
And everyone lived next door to the sea.
Food was abundant and so was coal and shoes and the children all wore...
Futura:
Hats
Children:
We thought that's what you said
The fox and the goose, the giant dromedary and the flying bat
Futura:
Rattle tat, bit bat!
Children:
Lived here
Futura:
No fear!
Children:
It was clear
Futura:
Sincere
Children:
Some people even thought the world was flat
Futura:
Flat! Flat!
Children:
Flit flat
Futura:
Rattle tat.
Children:
Bit bat.
Children:
Man is a greedy sort of creature
Futura:
Creature!
Children:
Who thought he could better mother nature
Futura:
Nature!
Children:
He made an unpleasant kind of world
For us to …
Children (Futura):
Grow (dum) up (dum) in (dum dim!)
Children:
Between everything there's a relation
Futura:
Sensation!
Children:
And kids are the crown of all creation
Futura:
Imagaination!
Children:
But it's rotten, we've forgotten
What came after that!
Futura:
Pretty children!
Do your lessons!
Pretty children!
Sing for Maria!
Children:
Hills and the valleys were made of glass
And the seas were full of purple fish
And the rivers ran upstream
Futura:
Unseen!
Children:
You said the moon was something like a silver dish
Futura:
Little silver dish .
Children:
And a tune
Futura:
Flim –floom
Children:
On a spoon
Futura:
Spin-spoon
Children:
Will always help you make a wish
Futura:
Pre-tty children, pre-tty children
Children:
We've forgotten
We've forgotten
What came after that
Futura claps sarcastically
Futura:
Clever children. Do you want a surprise? Just look at these silly
lessons. These silly silly silly lessons. Such a meaningless thing to
do. I've got something better than your lessons.
Marta:
What?
Futura:
Iwill tell you, I will tell you, if you come with me.
The children and Futura exit. Warner enters. ipr
my
Old friends ah
Warner: thi
Old friends, old plans ac
With these eyes bu
With these hands to
Built this city
Built it strong
My usefulness did not last long
Lost my pride
Lost the knack
He took my work
Gave nothing back
Only you
Futura girl
Can bring some light
To this man's world
Jeremiah enters and watches Warner below
Jeremiah:
What are you doing Warner? This is a controlled area.
Warner:
I was just looking for futura.
Jeremiah:
Never go near Futura again. If you behave yourself you may receive some
small credit, but if i see you down here again I'll eliminate you.
Warner:
I've no intention of coming here again.
Jeremiah:
Good, then see that you don't.
Warner and Jeremiah exit. Workers come in from the darkness.
When Maria wakes
Workers' chorus:
When the morning sun is rising
Though in depths we see no light
Through the tunnels, through the darkness
Comes the radiance of our night
Gone the torment
Gone the anger
As the perfect morning wakes
Now our hearts are beating faster
When Maria wakes
Worker 1:
We've been told she's only sleeping
She'll return at break of day
Love and hope will take us further
Purity will light the way
Worker 1 and workers:
Who is stronger, who is weaker?
He who gives or he who takes?
Now we all can face the future
When Maria wakes
Futura arrives above, Lake running in with her.
Futuras promise/Marias insane
Lake.
Maria's backl
Futura:
I promised you I'd be back and here I am.
My mission was a great success
And here's the plan.
They want to give you all
A day of glorious sunshine
But you must allow the kids
To join the workline.
I bring you all a chance
To taste some freedom.
Soon you will climb the steps
And see the kingdom.
I've told the masters we can
Bring them more power.
All they want is the children
To work for one hour.
Workers:
What's gong on?
She's never talked this way before
Futura:
Why not, children?
Workers:
An angel of mercy goes up
A devil appears at the door
Futura:
Children are strong!
Workers:
There's always been a rule we'd keep their hands clean
Futura:
They're strong enough to work
Workers:
We'd never put the children on the machines!
Futura:
Don't you know
They're getting bored anyway down here?
They need a little job to do
What can they find to do down here?
Their hearts so brave and true
Life is cold and grey down here
They need a little job to do
Just a decent little job to do.
Lake:
Give me a chance,
I'm stronger than anyone here
You need a rest, your body's weak now
And can work for you down here
Workers:
We always had a rule we kept them away
Lake:
Let me please, let me …
Workers (Lake):
How can they work for even one hour a day?
(Don't let them push me away)
Futura:
They're getting bored anyway down here
They need a little job to do
Life is so uninteresting
Till you have a little job to do
Give you a game to play down here
Something quite special and new
Life is so uninteresting
Now you have a little job to do
Just a decent little job to do
Workers:
Maria!
Workers:
I said to you id find a way to make us free
Workers:
This is madness.
What's come over you, Maria?
Futura:
Now you act like brainless fools, insulting me
Workers:
She's crazy
Futura:
I've told old Freeman
We can get him more power
Workers:
Take the kids
They shouldn't listen to insanity
Futura:
All he wants is the dumb brats
To slog a few hours!
Workers:
What's going on?
We won't stand for this anymore
Futura:
Children can work longer hours
Workers:
An angel of mercy goes up
A devil appears at the door
Lake:
Were Workers like you, just give me a chance
Lake (Workers):
You don't know what we can do
(Not here. This is madness)
'Till you give us a chance!
(This is lunacy, insanity)
Futura:
They're getting bored anyway down here
They need a little job to do
Life's so grim and grey down here
They've got more guts than you!
Workers:
Maria's insane!
They've made her insane!
She wants to control
Every mind, every soul
She must be a witch
She must be a witch
She needs to control
Every mind, every soul
Don't listen to her!
Don't listen to her!
This girl is a witch!
Is a witch!
Is a witch!
Is a witch!
Don't listen! Don't listen!
To this witch
To this witch!
Futura runs off, the workers pursue her through the machine rooms.
Jeremiah and Freeman are observing from above.
Freeman:
Magnificent! She works!
Jeremiah:
Futura's gone wrong. She's going too far, she's out of control!
Freeman:
She's under my control Jeremiah. The workers must hate Maria, then the
spirits will die within them
Jeremiah:
She'll make them riot. They've stopped work. The pressures falling
Freeman:
The pressure is only temporary I'll use the auxiliary never fear,
Jeremiah. Come with me
They leave, the workers are still chasing the robot
Workers:
Maria's insane! They've made her insane!
She wants to control every mind, every soul
She must be a witch
She must be a witch
She needs to control every mind, every soul
Don't listen to her, don't listen to her
This girl is a witch, this girl is a witch
She needs to control every mind, every soul
Don't listen to her, don't listen to her!
Don't listen, don't listen
To this witch, to this witch
Jeremiah and Freeman return
Freeman:
Excellent! Splendid! Jeremiah, your worries are unfounded. Everything is
alright. We now have the key; Futura. Metropolis is thriving. You will
see, my son will soon come round.
Jeremiah:
I have doubts, sir
Freeman:
Yes?
Jeremiah:
His strengths are different from yours. It's the girl, sir . She's their
Madonna, almost perfect. It's uncanny! Together they could destroy us
all!
Freeman:
But the girl is already dead. Warner has been instructed to kill her
Jeremiah:
It's not that simple. The last thing we need is a martyr for their
cause.
Freeman:
No Jeremiah. Once we have collected the blueprints from Warner, we can
then create scores of Futuras. The workers will be obsolete.
Jeremiah:
Warner may prove reluctant to comply
Freeman:
Warner will see that he has got no choice. Don't worry Jeremiah.
Jeremiah:
No, sir
SCENE 3 WARNER'S LABORATORY
Perfect Face (Reprise)
Warner:
Perfect face, in this light
First impression was so right
How could I
Ever replace
The beauty of this human face?
She's taken your place down below now
There's no turning back for me
No turning back for them
Any more
Maria is strapped to a couch, she wakes up.
Maria:
Who are you?
Warner:
My name's Warner I'm an inventor
Maria:
What am I doing here?
Warner:
I discovered the way to make a perfect woman. But I couldn't find the
perfect face. Until I had yours to copy
Maria:
There's a creature with my face?
Warner:
Yes. I called her Futura, but they stole her away from me. She's taken
your place down below.
Maria:
Why?
Warner:
John Freeman wants to discredit you , his some is in love with you and
that is something Freeman will never allow.
Maria:
I want to go back
Warner:
It's too late now your friends will kill you. Futura is going to betray
you.
Maria:
Please untie me.
Warner:
I have no power to change anything. No power To change anything.
Haven't you finished with me?
Maria:
Haven't you finished with me? Here
Mr Warner, you copy these tears
Bottle them up and sell them to my friends
Whose souls are so tortured by fear
That they've forgotten how to cry
Here, Mr Warner,
You can copy these Mr Warner
That should make you pleased Mr Warner
That should make you pleased
What have you left me inside?
Here Mr Warner, you copy this heart.
Cut it from card and paint it with my blood
Pretend it was yours from the start
So you can know the pain I feel
Now Mr Warner
You can take a bow Mr Warner
You can do it now Mr Warner
You can do it now
Warner:
You are more perfect
Than anything I can imagine
You are more perfect than anything
I could ever build
Believe me I'm touched by your innocence
I wish I could help you
Maria:
Just let me leave
And go back to the people I love
Haven't you finished with me?
Here Mr Warner you copy these arms
Copy these ropes and copy these bruises
It's you who created these charms
So you could make the angels cry
See Mr Warner
You're the one who's free Mr Warner
You're the one who's free.
Warner releases Maria. Freeman and Jeremiah enter
Freeman:
I hope I'm not disturbing you so late? What's happening here? Another
experiment?
Warner:
I was just going to bed.
Jeremiah:
Got her all parcelled up have you? Where is the body?
Warner:
I have released her
Freeman:
You've what!?
Jeremiah:
Shall we kill him?
Freeman:
Now, just a moment, Jeremiah. You go too far you are too fanatical.
Warner is an old and trusted friend. He is full of humanity I would like
to be humane too. Put a bullet through his head!
Jeremiah shoot Warner.
Freeman:
Find maria! Stop her! Eliminate her too! If she sees my son, I lose
everything. DESTROY HER! lea' i lose everything. Destroy her!
SCENE 4 THE WORKERS' ZONE
Tannoy Voice #2:
Control to all sections. The power is falling below the critical level.
All sections return to the machines. We cannot guarantee your safety
below 101.11. The pressure must be restored. Repeat, the pressure must
be restored.
Marco:
Why did Maria give us hope? To keep us down on our knees?
2011:
Break the machines! Break them!
Groat:
What are you doing? Get back to work! You! Come 'ere!
Marco:
We've been tricked! You too Groat!
Groat:
Don't touch the machines.
Marco:
The elitists are nothing without power break the machines!
Groat:
If you destroy the machines you will destroy life!
1178:
It's too late!
Lake appears above, the robot has a knife to her throat.
Lake:
Help! She's here!
Let's watch the world go to the devil
Futura:
All this chaos, isn't it fine?
Taste the destruction, it is divine
Who gives a damn? Burn in hell
I love the burning, I love the smell
Workers:
She's the devil!
Futura(Workers):
Let's watch the world go to the devil
(Maria's insane)
Don't give a damn
(don't listen to her)
If no one survives
(The Girl is a witch)
Let's watch the world go to the devil
(She's the devil!)
Workers/Futura:
She'll/I'll laugh at metropolis burning alive
A Worker runs in panicking
Worker:
Fire! Fire! The machine room's on fire!
Worker
Let's call the control room
Groat:
The control room is sealed. No one can go in there now
Futura:
Nothing can last, nothing can live
Everyone breaks, everything gives
Children must die, waited too long
Nothing is sacred, nothing is strong
Worker :
Leave that child, Maria, or we'll kill you!
Steve arrives by lift, George arrives on foot.
Steven:
Maria, let the child go, Maria, and give me the knife.
Futura:
Pretty boy come and get me, pretty boy!
Steven:
They'll kill you, Maria!
Futura:
He is John Freeman's son. He is a traitor. Kill him!
The workers take hold of Steven, George climbs up towards Futura
George:
Give me the knife, Maria!
Futura plunges the knife into George laughing he falls back dead.
Groat:
She's not Maria. She's the devil! Let's burn the devil before she
destroys us all!
Workers (Futura):
You know this girl is the devil (Children!)
She has to die if we're to survive (Children!)
Workers:
Let's watch this girl go to the devil
Into the fire, burn her alive
She's the devil! She's the devil!
She's the devil! She's the devil!
Burn!
The Workers lift Futura and plunge her still laughing, into the furnace,
Stefan is helpless to stop them. The workers draw back in awe. Maria's
image has disappeared the metal shape of a robot appears. The workers
are frozen in horror. Maria enters and sees the carnage.
0ne of those nights
Maria:
I dreamed
That the earth turned to stone
And we walked alone
We were cold
Dust
We had all turned to dust
The machines gone to rust
We were old
Why this strange sad dream?
Why this ugly nightmare?
Is this how it ends
Or at least pretend
Why kill every flower - just for power?
Looks like one of those nights
That has no beginning
One of those nights that has no end
You search for the truth
You dream of a lover
They take all your youth
They take all your friends
Rain
In my dream there was rain
And the tears of my brothers
In pain
There was hope
With the first ray of light
We would all be all right
In the dawn
How did we begin?
When we stood together?
Will we find again
What we've known forever?
We still have the power
We can right the wrong here
There is one more chance
No more time to fight - we need light!
No more time for the nights
That have no beginning
Gone are the nights that have no end
Calm is the force
That looks to the future
Strong is the cause
The love of my friends
Strong is the cause
Strong to the end
Marco rushes in
Marco:
The fire is out of control, number six is shut down.
Groat:
I've opened the floodgates.
27101:
You'll drown us all.
Groat:
We must try and save the machines.
2010:
The pipes are bursting in the heat. The water level is rising.
Steven:
We all must go up to the city I know a place that we could hide
together.
Groat:
We must save the machines.
Worker two:
To hell with them. To the lifts!
Groat:
You can't use the lifts. The guards will shoot you on sight.
Steven:
But we'll be dead if we stay here. Everyone try to get to level 10 and
we'll join you there.
Tannoy Voice
Warning to all workers, warning to all workers. The air filters are
no-longer functioning, the oxygen supply has been exhaused. Warning to
all workers. The atmosphere in the machine rooms can no longer support
life.
Requiem
Workers:
Day after day we worked on these machines
This is what we called life
All that we could call life
The final hours of metropolis
Death has come to those below
As to those above
Pressure was all there was to think about
One oh one point one we must maintain
Or someone pays
Supplying the power for metropolis
They work us night and day
SCENE 5 FREEMAN'S OFFICE
Freeman:
What has happened? Where is Futura?
Jeremiah:
Futura went out of control. She killed Steven.
Freeman:
Killed Steven? Where is Futura?
Jeremiah:
The workers burned her in the furnace. Now that Steven is dead I will
always be loyal. I will serve you all my life.
Metropolis
Freeman:
Do you know what it took
To build a city
One like this
Metropolis?
Starting with nothing
But the rubble and
End up with this
Metropolis?
Hell
A life born from hell
A world built from strength
And wisdom
And skill
But only held together
By my sheer will
Yes, I built this city
Out of the ashes
With nothing but dreams
With nothing else but dreams
We are the keeper of the magic dreams
The singer of the glorious songs
This is the land we love above all else
Whatever else, we'll keep it strong
Duty, without me this city
Would go off the rails
Sink into the ground
Disintegrate. Run down.
Below
They work down below
And if some must suffer so others can soar
That's how a city grows
My pride won't let me go on
I built it and I can destroy it at will
My son and city have gone
Anger, this rage deep inside me
Oh, why has my one son
Been taken from me?
How could I let this be?
I'm going mad
I m giving credence to
Emotions they're
Just frivolous
It had come down to this
The only thing that had been sure
Is we endure
And now it's gone
I can't go on
Freeman breaks down. Metropolis explodes and is destroyed. Steven,
Maria, the children and the survivors appear from below one by one from
a manhole in the centre of the stage. It is snowing and the children
catch it in their hands in wonder.
Finale
Steven:
This was the vision
This was the city
Shimmering tower
Arrogant power
Banished to darkness
Home of the living
Grave of the dying
Alone now
Be strong now
Maria:
Hold back the night
The darkness fades towards the dawn
We will all fly high someday
Though days were dark
And nothing came to light the way
Maria (Steve):
We will fly far
(We will fly far…)
Steven:
Away!
They were working for the devil
The city lights were fuelled in hell
Maria:
The city lights turn now to darkness.
Steven and Maria:
But we will survive brightly alive
Children:
Oh my what a beautiful city
Built our their fathers
A gift to their sons
Children (Steve):
There's hope now
(sunlight)
That we'll make it better
(Brightly shining sun)
Children (Maria):
The best that a man can become
(Faraway so …)
Steven (Maria) {Children}:
If we could just see the sun
(Hold back the night )
{We are the children of metropolis }
If we could just see the light
(Look towards the light)
{We are the children}
Steven (Maria):
We will all fly high
(We will fly high)
Company:
Though days are dark
And nothing comes to light the way
We will all fly high today
